About the Trip

This Wild and Scenic 2 Day Adventure is a popular overnight option during our lower water seasons for those looking for a bit more adventure! We start at our Headquarters where you'll meet your guides who will load all of your overnight gear into our vehicles and outfit you with all the gear necessary for the river. This combines inflatable kayaking through the Middle Taos Box with our Rio Grande Gorge sections for the perfect 2 day adventure.

  • Two days of inflatable kayaking on the Wild and Scenic Rio Grande
  • Comfortable developed campgound in the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument
  • Amazing wildlife sightings including bighorn sheep and golden eagles
  • Four delicious meals prepared by your guides

This trip meets at our private, Rio Grande Headquarters which is conveniently located 1 hour north of Santa Fe and 30 min. south of Taos. Our fully stocked Headquarters and Outfitters Shop is in the heart of the Rio Grande Gorge right across the street from the river, less than 1 mile from the finishing point of the most popular trips and offers safe, secure parking in our private parking lot.

Do I need to know how to swim?
It is recommended but not mandatory that all our guests know how to swim. All guests are given Type V, US Coast Guard approved flotation devices (lifejackets) that are designed to float you on your back, nice and high in the water. For all our class 3 and above sections on the Rio Grande, you will also be issued a helmet.

What do I need to wear?
We have packing lists for you to review for each of our different trip types. Remember that the weather changes dramatically throughout the New Mexico rafting season. It can be significantly colder during March-May we encourage our guests to always be prepared.

What if it’s my first time, do I need experience?
There is no experience required for any of our river trips. However, we encourage experience for our more difficult, Taos Box and Razorblades trips. Please feel free to call us with any concerns or questions about appropriate trips for your group.

Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately, we cannot bring our furry friends on our river trips. We ask that you leave your pets at home before heading to our headquarters.

Can I leave my dog with you?
We do not have a secure area to keep your dog at our headquarters. Moreover, the temperatures get extremely hot during our season, because of this, you will NOT be able to leave your pets in your car. We ask that you leave your pets at home before heading to our headquarters.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The setting for the first day is the Middle Taos Box section Upper Rio Grande Gorge.  The Middle Taos Box Inflatable Kayaking Trip is a rare scenic float through one of the most remote, pristine and little traveled sections of the Rio Grande. Only accessible by the 1 mile long hike into the depths of the Upper Rio Grande Gorge. Our small, light kayaks are packed down by the group to our put-in at the confluence with the Rio Grande and the Red River. The whitewater on this section is calm with one class III rapid. A wonderful opportunity to see interesting wildlife and visit some riverside archeological sites.

Tonight’s camp is in the depths of the canyon in the heart of the Rio Grande Gorge under the stars of the New Mexico skies. Sit back in one of our camp chairs and take in the sunset as the colors of the canyon walls change right before your eyes. Enjoy a cold drink as the guides pass around appetizers and prepare a gorgeous dinner and dessert. There will be ample photo and hiking opportunities directly from camp.

In the morning you’ll wake up to a hot cup of coffee and a beautiful breakfast before loading up the rafts and continuing downstream. A nice scenic float this morning through the Orilla Verde Recreation Area and the historic village of Pilar. Somewhere in this stretch, we’ll stop on the side of the river for a nice lunch put together by your guides. After lunch, we head downstream and finish to the trip through the famous whitewater of the Racecourse section of the Rio Grande. The Lower Gorge of the Rio Grande is a broad canyon with lush riparian habitat along the banks of the Rio. As we enter the “Racecourse” section the geology radically changes as we pass onto the Rio Grande fault line, one of the largest intercontinental fault lines in North America.

Our guides are the best in the business, focusing on safety and guest service as a top priority. All are extremely knowledgeable about the area’s geology, ecology and history and just love being on the river. Many with experience on rivers all over the country and across the globe, I know you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do and will certainly help to make your day on the river the best possible.

Minimum age for the Wild and Scenic 2-Day Adventure is 12 and a parent or guardian must be present. The minimum party size is 4.

The Wild and Scenic 2 Day Adventure trips are water level dependent and usually are best run in April and July through Sept

Please call, 1-800-983-7756 for available dates and river conditions.

This trip is yet another reason why New Mexico River Adventures is your choice for the greatest and most unique river rafting trips in Northern New Mexico! We will finish the trip back at our headquarters where photos will be waiting.
