Abiquiu

The present village of Abiquiu, population approximately 2,707, is built on the ruins of a prehistoric Tewa Pueblo dating back to the 13th to 16th centuries.  Multiple families settled here on a community land grant given to them by Governor Tomas Velez Capuchin in 1754.  The new community was called the Pueblo de Abiquiu and became an important trading center for a large area of the Southwest.  During this time, Abiquiu was the third largest settlement in all of New Mexico.  Now, the town basically consists of the Abiquiu Inn, Bode’s General Store and the post Office.  However, it’s the surrounding area that draws thousands of visitors a year to this magical land known for it’s “Cliffs of Shining Stone”.  This amazing part of New Mexico was the former home of and inspiration to Georgia O’Keeffe and presently the jump off point to amazing adventures and incredible landscapes along the Rio Chama River.

New Mexico River Adventures is proud to be part of this vibrant community, and to offer the following outdoor adventures to help make your Abiquiu experience truly memorable.  Come immerse yourself in the land of enchantment.
