Rio Grande Racecourse Half Day

It’s simple, whitewater kayaking is one of the two greatest activities available to the human race! I know, you’re probably saying, “that is absurd!”. Well folks, it’s not and I assure you that if you try it you will agree. If you’re like me, you’ve been dreaming about waves hitting you in the face as you paddle down a challenging river through a beautiful canyon for years. Call your local river outfitter or for the trip of a lifetime on one of the countries great whitewater rivers like the Rio Grande in New Mexico or the American River in California. On most whitewater rivers, like the Rio Grande and the American, there are different sections that cater to all levels of skill and ability so don’t be shy because there is something for everyone! And, of course, the professional instructors here at New Mexico River Adventures are always eager to pass on their knowledge of this great sport! When people talk about whitewater kayaking, they usually are referring to one of two different forms. Either using an inflatable kayak, that you sit on top of, or a whitewater kayak, which is made of plastic and you sit in with a neoprene enclosure around your waist. An inflatable kayak is a great way to go if you’d like to start running some beginner/intermediate whitewater immediately. There is no experience required and you can enjoy a variety of wonderful rivers across the country! As long as you have appropriate clothing which will keep you warm even when you are in the water, a P.F.D (personal flotation device) or life jacket, a helmet and a paddle, you’ll be ready to have a great time on the river. The latter form of kayaking is a bit different. Each participant must seek out qualified instruction from an accredited whitewater kayaking school which you can find easily in most whitewater states. There you will find instructors who will first teach you how to stay safe on the river and how to exit and swim your bat to shore if you flip over. As well as the basic paddling strokes, river and boat dynamics and eventually how to preform a “whitewater roll” which enables you to stay in your boat as opposed to having to swim to shore each time you flip over. This type of kayaking requires more gear including a neoprene spray skirt which keeps your boat dry and free of water when you are upside down. Both of these options are spectacular, it just depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking to learn the wonderful sport of whitewater kayaking, start with a program to teach you the basics and develop skills that will take you all the way to the most difficult rivers in the world. Otherwise, get right into some great whitewater with the outfitter of your choice on whichever river you choose in an inflatable kayak in which you will be in full control of your craft as you negotiate exciting class 2-3 rapids on your first trip out!
