After finishing up the first week of rafting season, many rafting companies are trying to sort out how busy this year is going to be. As guests seek to find the best possible rafting option for them, they are looking at Taos Box rafting trips, one of the world’s most popular whitewater rafting destinations. Taos Box is a canyon that flows through the heart of the Rio Grande Gorge at 800 feet deep. This gorge is one of the best to be found in New Mexico. Many recreational areas provide hiking, biking, sightseeing, and rafting along the gorge. Taos Box is one of the two main sections for rafting, the other being the Racecourse Run. Taos Box rafting is famous for its giant rapids that provide an intense experience for skilled rafters. The river is calm at the beginning with the rapids increasing and becoming more intense at the end. This section is rated as a Class IV, with different sections packed in with fast paced water rides that are going to soak everybody involved. This rafting is typically a full day length of rafting, with a stop in between to take a break. It is in the heart of the canyon where a lunch is served by the guide as they tell stories of the area’s geology, ecology and history of the river. There is a variety of different boat options for this run, where a guide will either show every how to paddle in a paddle boat, oar boats where guests hang on as the rapids are attacked, or combo boats where the guide rows and the guests paddle. This provides you with a variety of rafting options whether you are experienced or not. During a Taos Box rafting, you will most likely see plenty of wildlife! Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep are always in the area grazing, as well as plenty of birds and other wildlife. The area is covered in beautiful nature, boulders and cliffs that provide a serene area. 500 year old trees live in this area and it is a semi-arid climate. Taos Box rafting trips are sought after because of the high level of skill required as well as the beauty that the gorge provides the area with.
