Gourmet River and Wine on the Rio Chama

June 23rd, 2013

Over Memorial Day weekend we welcomed our second annual Gourmet Wine tasting trip on the Rio Chama with Vivac Winery and Chef Ky Quintanilla from Lambert’s of Taos.  This years trip was spectacular as we spent three days traveling through the Wild and Scenic Rio Chama Wilderness.  Our trip this year was sold out with river, food and wine enthusiast alike.  We had 4 rafts, 2 inflatable kayaks and 2 stand up paddleboards.  Nearly everyone got an opportunity to enjoy the inflatable kayaks while the rest of us rode in the paddle boats with Matt and Bean as Sean and Susie rowed the gear boats.  We all marveled at Sean and Katheryn’s abilities to negotiate each rapid and the wind on the stand up paddleboards with Jake leading the way. As we settled into the first nights camp, Michelle and Jesse prepared the first sequence of wines for all to enjoy and started us off immediately with Vivac’s incredible Chardonnay.  The guides set the table with awesome nice pine cone and flower center pieces put together by Susie and Bean and sat down for the first of 4 delicious courses. As Chef Ky presented each course, Jesse and Michelle gave […]

A Snowy Novenber Day at New Mexico River Adventures Headquarters

Winter At New Mexico River Adventures

January 2nd, 2013

Winter is brewing here at New Mexico River Adventures.  It’s been cold recently and we’ve started to see some wet storms.  In the last three week we’ve had close to 12 inches of snow at the boathouse and more than 4 feet in the mountains.  Not only does this mean the ski areas are happy and constantly opening up new terrain, but it also means that are snow pack is building for the 2013 season.  We’ll keep praying for snow and looking forward to an exciting rafting season to come on the Rio Grande and Rio Chama. One thing is for sure, the landscape around the NMRA shop and boathouse is just as stunning in the winter as they are in the summer.  With the exposed rock peaking through the snow across the ridge lines and the canyons, we are truly lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world.  Red chile ristras litter the porches and the candelarias are still out as Christmas passes us by and the 2013 commences. As the winter continues and the snow falls, we will be keeping you posted on all the new trips and developments with New Mexico River Adventures.  Also […]

Rio Chama-Rama!

June 20th, 2012

The Rio Chama is one of a kind.  Whether you choose to do a single day trip or a multi-day trip, you will be blown away by the beauty that the canyon holds.  With the lower water levels we are experiencing on the Rio Grande, the Army Corps of Engineers has been running a fantastic amount of water through the Chama to help out with irrigation and the ecology downstream. All of our Rio Chama trips meet in Abiquiu at Bode’s general store (great breakfast burritos) where we hop into our vans and make the drive to the put-in.  The daily trip drives to Chavez Canyon, just below the Christ in the Desert Monastery, and floats the 9 mile journey to Big Eddy take-out with fun class 2 and 3 whitewater in between.  The wilderness section begins outside of Tierra Amarilla just below El Vado Dam and runs down to either Chavez Canyon or Big Eddy depending on the length of your trip. This sections holds great wildlife sightings, spectacular views as well as a few fun rapids. We are proud to also include two specialty trips this season, a beer trip with the folks from Marble Brewery and a […]

Shiny New Boats!

March 10th, 2012

New Mexico River Adventures has just added to our fleet! We are the proud new owners of two brand spanking new Super Duper Pumas made by the company Aire out of Idaho.  We absolutely love this versatile design.  It is long enough to offer great stability in higher water situations in the Taos Box, as well as plenty of room for our guests to be comfortable and not feeling like sardines in a can.  The Super Duper is also skinny enough to work well in lower water technical situations, such as sliding through the slot at Big Rocks or threading through rocks at the Eye of the Needle.  Along with these two red beauties, we also added a couple of double inflatable kayaks into the mix.  Last season we had a few requests for these and we have answered the call.  They are perfect for any combination of skill level and a great way to share an adventure with your favorite partner.  New Mexico River Adventures does not charge any extra to take inflatable kayaks on our Rio Grande Gorge, Orilla Verde, Bosque or Racecourse trips.  We are so excited to take these babies for a spin.  If you book […]

So It Begins!!

March 18th, 2011

It is official! New Mexico River Adventures has run our first trip of the 2011 season.  Mark and Leigh of San Antonio, Texas joined us for two fantastic days of biking and rafting.  The biking portion took place along the West Rim trail overlooking the Taos Box section and stopping for lunch near the Gorge Bridge, a breathtaking sight not to be missed.  The river trip was the next day on the lower canyon starting with a scenic float through the Orilla Verde State Park followed up with and exciting ride through the Racecourse, the class 3 section.  The temperatures in Northern New Mexico are starting to warm up and spring is definitely in the air! It is prime time for a those of you out there that would prefer to run the river and see less people and more wildlife.  The bald eagles are still hanging out near the river fattening up for the flight back north in the near future. The plans for our brand new shop are moving along right on schedule.  NMRA will be meeting all of our guests at the new location just south of the ending point of the most popular section on the […]

A Letter From John At Known World Guides

February 17th, 2011

Hello Everyone, I just wanted to inform everyone that Known World Guides has been sold to some of the Known World Guides. Matt Gontram and Wendy Hinton have purchased the business from me in the past few weeks. I had decided after 16 years of outfitting that I wanted to pursue other items such as my conservation work and have a little more free time in the summers to run other rivers and explore more of the world. I’m sure that most of you all remember Wendy as she was one of our Guide School Graduates in the summer of 2001 and then became a key figure in our operation for a number of years before leaving to run other rivers and pursue Nursing School. Matt and I have known each other for many years and worked together on the Salt River in AZ as well as his working for Known World during the high water seasons. Matt also has an international guiding business called Global Descents,,  that runs rivers in Africa and Chile just to name a few. I want to assure you all that Matt and Wendy are some of the most professional, enthusiastic, and personable outdoor […]
